First Church in Roxbury (first) holds its first service.

(July) The thatched-roof church is located in John Eliot Square at today’s 10 Putnam Street. The sixth oldest church in New England, it sits on the oldest site for continued religious activity in Boston. The congregation was established in 1631. Thomas Weld is the first minister. John Eliot is appointed the first “teacher” in November 1632, serves as pastor until his death in 1690, and is succeeded by Nehemiah Walter, who serves until 1750. New churches are built in (second) 1674*, (third) 1741*, (fourth) 1746*, and (fifth) 1804.* The congregation becomes Unitarian in 1810. The congregation is dissolved in 1977.
